Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. The young woman was just a toddler when her father who was employed as a carnival barker died. Her mother was forced to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. After only two school years, Ruth left to pursue the acting career. It was a difficult path to pursue. While she was offered an opportunity in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that was offered. She then worked as the hat checker in the nightclub before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. In Boston, she made a buck as an usherette by during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. Her studies in drama led her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
